Violent solar storm could knock out the Internet ‘for weeks or months,’ scientist warns

A lead researcher out of George Mason University (GMU) warns that increasingly violent solar activity could potentially cause an “internet apocalypse” disrupting all electronic communications on Earth, including satellite communications.

  • “The internet has come of age during a time when the sun has been relatively quiet, and now it’s entering a more active time,” stated principal investigator Peter Becker, a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at GMU in Fairfax, Virginia. “It’s the first time in human history that there’s been an intersection of increased solar activity with our dependence on the internet and our global economic dependence on the internet.”

A report from George Mason University published that the Department of the U.S. Navy presented a $13.6 million grant to the college to fund state-of-the-art data mining, analysis, and scientific modeling, among other endeavors in collaboration with the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) with a primary focus on increased solar activity.

  • “There have been a lot of (solar) flares,” Becker says. “Flares are when the sun brightens, and we see the radiation, and that’s kind of the muzzle flash. And then the cannon shot is the coronal mass ejection (CME). So, we can see the flash, but then the coronal mass ejection can go off in some random direction in space, but we can tell when they’re actually going to head towards Earth. And that gives us about 18 hours of warning, maybe 24 hours of warning, before those particles actually get to Earth and start messing with Earth’s magnetic field.”

Earth is bombarded with solar radiation quite often. Flares reach Earth in just minutes and, like CMEs, are harmless for those of us on the surface. This is due to Earth’s magnetic field and dense atmosphere acting as a shield from cosmic radiation and charged particles emitted by our Sun.

On the other hand, CMEs can be far more devastating to critical infrastructure.

While it’s common to have some interference with radio and GPS from solar flares, massive geomagnetic storms caused by CMEs can induce worse outcomes; i.e. disrupting electric currents in power lines, transformers, and other electrical systems. This can potentially damage power grids, leading to power outages.

According to George Mason University, violent solar storms are expected to become more frequent and severe over the next decade, with activity not seen since the Carrington Event in 1859. This was the last time a CME reached Earth.

  • “And then you get this kind of insidious thing where you could actually get current from ground…So everybody thinks, ‘Oh, my computer’s grounded, I’m okay,'” but in an event like this, if you drive inductive currents to the surface of the Earth, it can almost work backwards, and you can end up actually frying things that you thought were relatively safe,” Becker told Fox Weather.

What can we do to protect our electronics? Well, it doesn’t sound like much, according to Becker.

  • “If we have a warning, every minute counts because you can put satellites in safe mode. You can take transformers off-line from the grid, so they don’t fry,” Becker said. “So there’s things you can do to mitigate the problem. And then, more long term, you’re talking about hardening the internet. And that’s, of course, an economic challenge because it’s sort of like an insurance policy. You may never need it, and it would cost trillions to really harden the system,” Becker explains.

If you’re reading this story on Space Explored, the good news is the internet has not been destroyed by a powerful solar storm.

Today, space weather is actively monitored by various space agencies. But it’s true more needs to be done around hardening satellite systems, electrical grids, and Internet infrastructure to mitigate the impact of increased solar activity.

iPhone 15 has the fastest 5G performance in these 12 countries

We got an early look at the iPhone 15 Pro Max cellular performance from Ookla in October with its Q3 report showing almost 100% faster 4G/5G speeds compared to iPhone 14 Pro Max. Now Ookla has shared a new 5G performance study and iPhone 15 lineup has dominated as the fastest 5G devices around the world.

Ookla shared the new report on its blog. Collecting data from 13 countries between September and October for iPhone (August to October for Samsung devices), the results show the iPhone 15 Pro Max or in some cases the iPhone 15 or 15 Plus are the fastest 5G smartphones by a good margin. And an iPhone was the fastest 5G device in all but just one of the 13 countries.

Ookla notes that there are a number of variables when it comes to 5G performance like “5G investments by governments and mobile operators, different 5G spectrum allocations, and mobile 5G plans.”

In the US, the iPhone 15 Pro Max was on top with 285.02 Mbps as the median 5G download speed. The rest of the iPhone 15 family took 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place, with the next closest device being the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 with 231.56 Mbps.

5G performance in Canada was lower overall with the iPhone 15 Pro Max at 217.35 Mbps. The 15 Plus and 15 Pro took 2nd and 3rd and the Galaxy Z Fold5 snuck into 4th place with 175.63 Mbps.

In the UK, the new iPhones dominated with the Galaxy Z Fold4 coming in 6th place roughly 20-30 Mbps slower than the modern iPhones’ median 5G download speed.

One interesting result was in Brazil – the iPhone 15 took the top spot over the 15 Pro and Pro Max with 533.32 Mbps. However, the 15 Pro and Pro Max were close being with 523 Mbps.

The only country on the list where an iPhone didn’t have the fastest 5G median download speed was the Philippines. The Galaxy Z Fold5 beat out the iPhone 15 Pro by just 1 Mbps.

iPhone 15 wireless charging apparently broken in many GM cars with iOS 17.1

While iOS 17.1.1 last week was released to fix iPhone 15 wireless charging problems for BMW drivers, the same can’t be said for GM drivers. A number of GM drivers have taken to Reddit and other online forums to report that they are unable to wirelessly charge their iPhone 15 in their car after updating to iOS 17.1.

iPhone 15 wireless charging problems: BMW first, now GM

After mounting complaints, Apple finally acknowledged a bug impacting wireless charging for iPhone 15 users in some BMW cars last month. In these instances, the problem would also temporarily disable NFC features of the iPhone 15, such as Apple Pay. Apple rolled out a fix for BMW wireless charging issues as part of iOS 17.1.1 last week.

In the meantime, however, GM drivers say that they are no longer able to use their in-car wireless charging pads to charge their iPhone 15 after updating to iOS 17.1. There are a number of complaints from GM drivers on Reddit, GM forums, and Apple’s support forums. These issues, however, don’t appear to impact NFC features

GM drivers say that last week’s iOS 17.1.1 update did not fix their wireless charging problems, nor does the current iOS 17.2 beta cycle. Two different GM drivers say that they spoke to Apple about the problems, and Apple told them to talk to GM about it. The key, however, is that wireless charging for these people worked prior to updating to iOS 17.1, so it’s clearly something tied to that update.

9to5Mac’s Take

Based on these bizarre wireless charging problems that have affected GM and BMW drivers, paired with my own experiences using in-car wireless chargers, I’m starting to question the usefulness of wireless charging in cars. It clearly seems to be a fickle solution in a lot of cases, even though there are some convenience benefits, particularly if you have a car with wireless CarPlay.

Do you find in-car wireless charging to be useful or more of a headache? Let us know in the comments.

Israel launches ‘targeted’ military operation inside Gaza’s Al-Shifa Hospital

Israel said it had launched a “targeted” military operation against Hamas early Wednesday morning inside Gaza’s largest hospital Al-Shifa, where thousands of Palestinians are believed to be sheltering.

Conditions inside the hospital, which has run out of fuel and is no longer considered operational, have deteriorated rapidly in recent days amid intense fighting, with doctors warning of a “catastrophic” situation for patients, staff and displaced people still inside.

In a statement posted online, the Israel Defense Forces said it had begun “a precise and targeted operation against Hamas in a specified area in the Shifa Hospital.” It remains unknown how many troops have entered the hospital, but Israeli tanks could be seen inside the facility’s complex, a journalist at Al-Shifa told CNN.

“We can see them pointing the guns of the tanks toward the hospital. We are not sure whether soldiers are inside the hospital [buildings], but they are inside the complex with the tanks,” Khader Al Za’anoun, a reporter for the Palestinian news agency, Wafa, told CNN.

He said there were gunfire exchanges across the yard, and some of the windows in one of the buildings were out.

Doctors and journalists at the hospital have described to CNN desperate efforts to keep premature babies alive, and limited procedures taking place by candlelight.

In its statement Wednesday, Israel again accused Hamas of continuing to use the large hospital complex for military purposes which, it said, “jeopardizes the hospital’s protected status under international law.”

Hamas and hospital officials have consistently rejected Israel’s claims that Hamas has built a command center under the hospital.

30-minute warning

A doctor inside Al-Shifa told CNN they were given 30 minutes’ warning before the Israeli operation began.

“We were asked to stay clear of the windows and the balconies. We can hear the armored vehicles, they are very close to the entrance of the complex,” Dr. Khaled Abu Samra said.

Hundreds of staff and patients are still inside Al Shifa, according to the most recent reports from the hospital, along with several thousand who have sought shelter from Israel’s air and ground offensive.

The Israeli statement said, “The IDF is conducting a ground operation in Gaza to defeat Hamas and rescue our hostages. Israel is at war with Hamas, not with the civilians in Gaza.”

A statement from Hamas blamed both Israel and the United States for the Israeli army raid on the hospital. By supporting what it called Israel’s “false narrative” – that Hamas was using Al-Shifa as a command and control base – it said the US had given Israel, “a green light … to commit more massacres against civilians.”

On Tuesday, the White House and the Pentagon said that Hamas is storing weapons and operating a command center from the hospital.

The Pentagon said the US has newly declassified intelligence that claims to show that Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad were using hospitals — including Al-Shifa — as a “way to conceal and support their military operations and hold hostages.”

Palestinian Health Minister Dr. Mai Al-Kaila said the Israeli army raid represents, “a new crime against humanity, medical staff, and patients” and could have “catastrophic consequences” for patients and medical staff.

Israel declared war on Hamas, the Palestinian militant group that controls Gaza, and launched a “complete siege” of the enclave following Hamas’ terror attacks in Israel on October 7. An estimated 1,200 people were killed in Hamas’ attacks, and about 240 taken hostage, most of whom remain captive in Gaza.

Since then, the Israeli response has killed at least 11,180 Palestinians – including 4,609 children and 3,100 women – according to the Palestinian Health Ministry in Ramallah, which draws on medical sources in Gaza.

International pressure on the Israeli government has hardened in recent days amid accounts of desperate circumstances at Gaza’s fuel-starved hospitals, and severe shortages of food and water.

United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday repeated his calls for a ceasefire in Gaza “in the name of humanity.”

Catastrophic conditions in Al-Shifa

Doctors and journalists have described catastrophic conditions inside Al-Shifa.

“There is no more water, food, milk for children and babies … the situation in the hospital is catastrophic,” hospital director Mohammad Abu Salmiya told CNN on Monday.

Journalist Al Za’anoun said people inside the hospital “are starving, there is no food or drinkable water, we barely get tap water for one hour a day.”

He said dozens of corpses are set to be buried in a mass grave in the yard of the hospital complex, as relatives cannot leave to bury their loved ones.

“The scene is horrifying, the smell of the dead people is unbearable, most of the bodies are of women and children,” Al Za’anoun told CNN.

Abu Salmiya told Al Jazeera there are plans to bury more than 150 bodies, but he was worried the grave would not be large enough.

In recent days, 15 patients have died at Al-Shifa, among them six newborns, due to power outages and a shortage of medical supplies, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah, which draws its figures from the Hamas-controlled territory.

Premature babies were taken out of failed incubators and wrapped in foil on Monday in a desperate bid to keep them alive after oxygen supplies ran out. Images showed several newborn babies placed together on a bed.

Egyptian health minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar said Tuesday they are working to bring 36 newborns from Al-Shifa to Egypt, though such a transfer would be dangerous.

The World Health Organization has recorded at least 137 attacks on health facilities in Gaza, which it said resulted in 521 deaths and 686 injuries.

Other protected sites, like schools, civilian shelters, and United Nations facilities have already been damaged or destroyed in over a month of Israeli airstrikes. On Monday, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugee announced that over 100 UN staffers had been killed in Gaza since fighting began – the most in the United Nation’s history.

Patrick Mahomes confirms he’s worn the same pair of underwear every game day for entire NFL career

There are a lot of sporting superstitions involving clothing. Tiger Woods is well known for wearing red shirts on the final day of golf tournaments, while Michael Jordan is said to have worn a lucky pair of blue basketball shorts from his University of North Carolina days under his Chicago Bulls uniform.

Apparently, NFL superstar Patrick Mahomes is no exception – the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback has admitted to wearing the same pair of red underwear on game days across his whole professional football career.

Earlier this year, former Chiefs player Chad Henne, who served as the backup to Mahomes from 2018 to 2023, discussed the two-time Most Valuable Player’s off-the-field activities with ESPN and let this curious story slip.

“Sunday, it’s the same pair [of underwear],” Henne said in February. “This has to be a superstition and good luck charm, for sure.”

After a few months of speculation, Mahomes has finally confirmed the rumor in an appearance on ESPN’s ManningCast with Peyton and Eli Manning of the Denver Broncos’ 24-22 win over the Buffalo Bills on Monday night.

“First, my wife Brittany got them for me, so I’m not throwing y’all down, but I have to wear them,” Mahomes said when asked about the superstition. “At the same time, I threw them on that first season, we had a pretty good season that season.

“I only wear them for game day though, so they’re not too worn down, they’re not like these nasty (underwear), I clean them.”

Despite this attempt to allay any hygiene-related concerns, the 28-year-old then conceded that he only washes the underpants when the team loses, which is not all too often, given Kansas City’s recent success.

“I wash them every once in a while at least. I mean if we’re on a hot streak, I can’t wash them, you know? I’ve just got to keep it rolling. As long as we’re winning,
I’ll keep the superstition going,” he added.

Mahomes is the reigning MVP and is coming off his second Super Bowl win. The Chiefs, who also count star tight end Travis Kelce among their ranks, are currently 7-2 and are seeking their third Vince Lombardi trophy in five years.
